Council vote on Hopkins Street safety improvements

After multiple community meetings and several rounds of design proposals, City Council will vote on the recommended Hopkins Corridor design on May 10 (Item #33 on the action calendar). We're excited that Councilmember Kesarwani has introduced a supplemental item proposing to extend protected bike lanes and pedestrian safety improvements from Gilman to San Pablo!

Neighbors and motorists are upset about these safety improvements because they require some on-street parking removal. So, we need to show strong support!

The Hopkins Street design recommendations and supplemental item will make the street safer and more attractive for walking, biking, and transit by adding

  • protected bike lanes from San Pablo to Sutter

  • pedestrian safety features (e.g., raised crosswalks at two locations, new stop signs at Hopkins & McGee)

  • transit improvements (e.g., bus boarding islands)

Here's what you can do:

  1. Send a letter now to make sure Council knows there are a lot of us who support the plan (the designs are good but not perfect, so the template letter requests a few improvements)

  2. Show up (via Zoom) on May 10 at 6pm and give public comment to approve item #33 and supplemental item 1, the Hopkins Corridor plan and extension to San Pablo.

Here are suggested talking points for your comment to Council

  • Please approve the Hopkins Corridor design with Walk Bike Berkeley's suggested changes.

  • I also support the supplemental item extending bike and pedestrian safety improvements to the west, from Gilman to San Pablo. West Berkeleyans deserve safe connections to Hopkins destinations too.

  • The design will make the street safe and convenient for people walking and biking - as called for in the City's adopted plans.

  • A safe Hopkins street will reduce climate emissions, support businesses, and keep our community safe and healthy.

Join the meeting May 10 at 6pm, but remember this item won’t be heard until later in the evening. Full meeting agenda here. Following #berkmtg on Twitter can help if you want to comment on an item but you’re not sure when it’ll come up.
