Yes on Measure L: Bond for Safe Streets & Affordable Housing

Measure L is an unprecedented opportunity to transform our neglected, unsafe streets and ensure a safe, sustainable, resilient future. Measure L would provide $300 million for streets: $231 million for repaving and traffic calming and $69 million for pedestrian and bicycle safety, sidewalks, and streetscapes.

The City has made specific commitments for this major investment in Berkeley’s streets. Measure L will improve safety and mobility throughout the city for people of all ages and abilities.

  • Critical bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements, as prioritized in the City’s bicycle and pedestrian plans

  • Smooth surfaces for people biking, scooting, and using assistive devices

  • Traffic calming and diversion where necessary to reduce increases in vehicle volume and speed associated with repaving

  • Accessible sidewalks for people with limited mobility

Walk Bike Berkeley advocated to ensure the bond will deliver these improvements.

In addition, earlier this year, City Council committed to increased funding for street maintenance, separate from Measure L, so streets paved now won’t deteriorate as they have in the past.

Bike East Bay, Telegraph for People, TransForm, and other safe streets groups are also supporting Measure L.

Measure L provides stronger oversight than any previous bond measure in Berkeley, including Measure T1, establishing an oversight committee, reporting requirements, and independent audits to ensure transparency, accountability, and that funds are spent as approved by voters. Measure L is projected to cost property owners approximately $410 per $1 million of assessed value per year during the life of the bond.

Please vote yes on Measure L to provide the funding needed to transform our infrastructure to meet our climate action, resiliency and Vision Zero safety goals.
